I'm new to the R/C hobby. I have recently purchased a 56" P-40 with a .56 saito. I have a 72mhz.tx/rx .There is a RAm glow starter thingy that needs hooked up to. the guy said I needed a y cable for servo to get it going. Dunno .. Can I start plane with out RAM and with an electric starter? and No experience flying what so ever. I am a member to AMA. I just never put plane in the air I am in dumfries va and there are 4 clubs 20 miles from me in all 4 directions. Kinda good kinda bad.But anyway would you mind maybe pick a day where I could meet someone on the field and show you my p-40 and tell me if it is worthy before i even attempt to fly? If the plane is fit i will join your club for sure. I have been doing many hours on flight simulators. clear view has a model for my plane so I kinda have an idea about its characteristics. I dont even know what fuel to buy. If you have some and want to sell it or know what I need I can bring it with me. I am a good guy business owner and can offer the club good benefits.

AKC,
If you have NEVER flown before, please don't start with your 50 size P-40.  You are doing the right thing to get some sim time, but I recommend getting a trainer, and starting there.  The P-40 is a low-wing warbird, and is an intermediate level plane.  I would hate to have your first experience in the hobby to be a crash or frustrating flight that you feel is too hard.

Meet us at the field this spring and get some trainer time.  I am an electric guy and can get you some time on a 48" Hobbyzone Super Cub.  Great flying little plane.  We also have some members that will buddy box you on a gas trainer.  Bring your P-40 and we will check it out, but keep it in the hangar for awhile.

Also, what is your simulator?  If it is Realflight, I would be happy to customize a model for you so you can fly your P-40 on the sim.  I need the AUW (weight) and CG location.  The CG (balance point) is something you should always check before a first-time flight.

This winter will give you an opportunity to practice on the sim while the weather warms up.

Keep us posted, as I would love to see your P-40 fly at the field this summer!

Thank you for the advise I kinda wondered  if there was a big difference in trainer and an actual war plane to actually fly. I tell ya what I got a smashing price on this plane. I do want to actually see it fly. But ill trade up for some one with a fit plane I can actually use for a while.
I have extra parts that came with it like wings with retracts and stuff . How long does it particularly take to become intermediate. I have become pretty decent on PC so far.

The simulator I am using is ClearView. It is new looks good , works good. Someone already made a plane for the p-40 and I downloaded it. Your right well atleast on the sim it was completely different. It even had the rudder being bent right (natural for plane). I had to adjust on tx. and slide over to keep it straight. I question the speed of the game but physics of speed , grav, and weight seem pretty good. I hear the software needs a lot of power . I get 960 fps on it. But I have 2 hd4870 vid cards. Are these simulators worth grading at the level true flying physics? Is it much harder than by computer?

Hey AsskickinChicken - The club has a few trainers that we use for flight training, so this would be a great way for you to get some initial stick time.  Your best bet for meeting us at the field is on those days we have access to the Poplar Ford Park flying field (third Sunday and following Saturday of each month, see "Upcoming Events" frame on right of websit).  Sunday the 17th is the next day we have the field so as long as the weather is good, please come out and join us.  Ken Bassett (rcflyer132@aol.com) has the club trainers so you'll want to touch base with him to ensure he'll be bringing them out.

sounds good.  I may stop by if the weather is okay.  I'm planning to go to the Snow Fun Fly on the 23rd, it will be open flying after the event which is from 10-12?.

Also, you should try to make our meeting on the 21st!
