Night flying at Poplar Ford will begin at sunset and go until 11:30pm.  AMA Park flyer rules apply which mean:

1) Electric only aircraft (helicopters included)
2) Aircraft speed not to exceed 60 mph
3) Aircraft must remain in clear visible sight of pilot at all times
4) Aircraft weight to nominally be 32 ounces or less.

All other AMA safety rules apply.

In this thread, I will provide helpful tips on how to convert a foamie electric to a great night flyer.  Flying under the stars is a great and relaxing experience, and it is now very easy and cheap to modify your plane to be very visible at night.

Here are some guidelines:
1)  Pick a slow-flying stable electric for your night flyer.
2)  When you start out, fly with gentle turns, and don't go too high or too far away until your eyes adjust.  Usually two or three practice flights is plenty for your brain to "see" the orientation easily.

Some aircraft recommendations include:
1) Parkzone Radian
2) Parkzone Slo-V
3) Super Cub DSM

These are just some examples.  Any electric foamie will do.  Trainers are the best for night flying.

Is there a scheduled date for an event or something?

Or is there going to be some open night flying time at the field?

hey Doug,

I think it is scheduled for 13 Oct. We will hopefully have pylon racing that day. Some type of cookout and then night flying.

Thanks Gary.

I'll have to see if I can come up with something by then.

The correct date for this year's night fly is Saturday, October 15, 2011.
Night operations begin at sunset until 11:30pm.
