I think we should post the official rules for the battery specs.  I would like to order my extra batteries soon, and the stock battery is not so good.

I recommend the following specs:

Cells:  3S
Capacity:  1500-1700 mah
C Rating: 20-30C continuous

I have a question about the batteries: Would the standard pack that came w/plane be able to complete 10 laps at full throttle?
I got the Mig 15 and it is my very first electrical plane and only had a couple of short flights.
Thank you.

Gianluca

P.S.
Some official rules would be nice like battery specs, fuel tank/ no fuel tank, etc. lest B.B. make them up as they would best suit his set-up...Smiley

For batteries, I really like the nanotech Turnigy Lipo.  They are well balanced cell-to-cell with a low internal resistance.  They are known to have a long cycle life and hold voltage very well under load.  They can easily be charged at 2C or more if needed.

The battery for the pylon racers are only $13 each.  I recommend folks get together and place a group order to share shipping.

Actually, did anyone ever consider the multiplex funjet as the official plane?

They seem durable, inexpensive, and could be painted differently so people can tell them apart in flight!

From the June meeting minutes: "Ken and Bob B have done some battery research and are recommending the use of 1800mAh/25C batteries and recommend each participant have 4 packs. They are going to do a bulk buy for those interested at $8.95 per battery."

The minutes say "recommending", but I thought this was presented as an upper limit, although I'm not sure if 25C is the max discharge or continuous discharge rate.  I read online that the stock ESC is the weak link in the power system, so we need to be careful to not burn them out by pulling too much current.

Doug - I'm not sure what all planes were considered but these were the ones selected.  I personally was hoping to have an excuse to buy a cheap foam WWII prop plane for pylon racing, but I have to admit that I've been having a lot of fun with my $90 Mig (it was on sale).  These ducted fan jetes could easily be painted too.

Any idea when they plan on doing the bulk buy?  I am hoping HL will have 4th of July sale so I can get a plane...

Oooo, a mini reno, thats a neat idea!

These ducted fan jetes could easily be painted too.

But if we do that, we may add weight...giving Bob B. an advantage, and we can't have that! Angry Grin

ha, yeah, we defenetly don't want to give Bob an advantage!   Grin

Ken sent the email below to the entire club this morning with an update on the battery.  Bottom line, looks like the Turnigy packs they were hoping to get are not in stock and the nano's are too long, but a Gens Ace 1550 mAh battery at $13.95 looks promising.  I did some research on Gens Ace and all the reviews are very favorable so I think they found a really good option.  The balance tabs on Gens Ace are JST-XH style, which is the same as Turnigy, so they will fit my charger's balance boards.

Sorry for the delay in the battery buy but we ran into some problems. Bob and I had initiallty thought we could use a battery costing about $9, however, they are out of stock and have been for some time. I've been monitoring the HobbyKing And HobbyPartZ sites to no avail. Currently two batteries in stock are a Gens Ace 1550MA, 25C for $13.96 (HobbyPartZ) and a Rino 1550MAH, 25C for $15.95 (Hobby King/International warehouse).  Another problem surfaced when we looked at the length of the battery. The battery that comes with the jet is 84mm in length. The Gens Ace is 92mmand the Rino 91mm. Many of the other batteries are 110 to 120mm in length. I have room in by setup (MiG-15) for up to 110mm. Bob is not sure he can go beyond 90 or so (F-86 jet). Everyone need to check their setup for the length they can use. Obviously, a longer battery willl affect the CG. Most of the 1800mah batteries are 120mm in length.

Way ahead: Everyone should check their setup to ensure a 92mm battery will fit. E-mail me (rcflyer132@aol.com) with your order for the Gen Ace. I will make the bulk order. If your happy with the orders I already have, please let me know that.

The 9 July date is probably not feasiable at this time. I suggest 13 August as the first race. It's after the NATS (several racers are going to that) and the end of July is busy with the LCAA electric fly-in and guys preparing for the NATS(Aug 2-6th).
