I was a past member for a short time in 2003 (AMA 149228) and would like to renew into the club now that there is again a field to fly at!

I see that there is a sound level, and would like to know if a New OS MAX 55AX w/factory muffeler may exceed the dB SPL limits for a 2-stroke engine, or if I should get a 70 4-storke instead?

I see that the 4-stroke limits are higher than the 2-stroke, so I wanted to know if anyone has had experiance with this engine, or something similar, possibly an OS MAX 40 or 61FS which was an older model engine I have, but similar in design?

If I need to switch to the quieter (lower RPM) 4-stroke I will.  I would just like to know before I take the new engine out of the box if possible.

Thanks,

Tom

Tom, That engine and muffler should pass the sound check without a problem I think. I had a older OS .46FX and it passed. The newer muffler designs are quieter than most older designs so you shouldn't have a problem. Someone else will no doubt comment on this soon. Welcome back (is your AMA card renewed yet, this is a must have.)  PS: We have our own lockable gate to the field that you must use and have the combo for.

I am in the process of renewin my NVRC membership along with AMA.

Would anyone know of an airplane hobby craftsman that would be willing to spend about a few hours orver a week or so assemblying an ARF (5 pieces) and possibly installing the radio, engine and pushrod's for a fair economical fee?

I would like to do it, but don't have the space.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom

An OS 55 will probably fail. A 50FX we tested was right on the edge. The two strokes are screamers. You may be able to prop it to get the RPMs down, but I wouldn't bet on it. A lot of us have gone to the 4-strokes because of the sound requirement.

Tom

I could help you with your a/c later this month after the building contest (May 21). I'm currently in a rush trying to cover my Ultra Sport for the contest. I live in Burke near Kings Park. Phone 703-425-1392.
