HI. I've been a big fan of R/C toys for a while now and recently became interested on R/C planes/Helos. I would like to find out what I need to do to learn how to fly and also which R/C plane I should buy as a beginner. Please advise.

Hi and Welcome!

Your first purchase should be a flight simulator,  Real FLight is one, Hobby Hanger in Chantilly VA carries that.

Do not purchase a plane just yet, first the Simulator.

Next I suggest coming out to the next club meeting which will be 21 April

Dhruvo Welcome,

As a new flyer and member I would suggest coming to a meeting as recommended by Bud and defenitly coming out to our field when it opens for flying.

In the mean time please read the material we have provided to the left under Become a Member:

" Become a Pilot and New Pilot Guide."

Contact one of our New Member Liaison's which is also under the same area.

You will find that area imformative and helpful to either finding information and joining the club.

After practicing on the sim a little, an easy plane to fly is the Radian glider.  It is one of my favorites, and very easy and relaxing to fly. The RTF version comes with everything for $250.

But pick out a plane that really interests you.  Do you like gas or electric?  Aerobatic or scale?  Then just make sure it is a good "first plane" like an Apprentice, Alpha, or a Cub.

Come to the field once it opens, and we can check out your plane and help you get started.

Thank you guys for all the info. This this exactly what I was looking for and I know someone here in the forum can help me out.

Bud, thanks for the flight simulator suggestion. I am going to check out the Hobby Hanger tomorrow. It's only about 5 miles from my place.
I would love to attend the club meetings and get to know people from the same interest. Do I have to be a club member to attend club meetings ? Do I have to be an AMA member before sign up for club membership ?

Gary, thank you for suggesting the Become a Pilot and New Pilot Guide.
Is there any way I sign up for event notification for club meetings and fly day ?

Tclaridge, def go with a RTF one. I don't think I will be ready for a gas any time soon. I've been checking out electric RTF at nitroplanes.com. There are few that I really like but will wait till I become master on sim  Smiley

Thanks again guys for all the tips and info. Hope to see you guys at the meeting on 22nd. Please keep me updated. What time is the meeting btw ?

No problem. We will be happy to have you at the meeting. I would suggest to just hold on before buying any plane until you meet some of us. The Sim would be a good idea. There are a few to pick from so maybe checking a few out. I would be happy to bring my laptop and sim to the meeting so you can check it out. I have the $200 version realflight but that is not needed.

The question about the membership. 1. You don't have to be a member to come to the meeting. 2. You must be a member of AMA before becoming a member of the club. 3. You must be a member of AMA and the club to fly at our field on a regular basis. We can explain all that to you.

There is no need to rush into the hobby. Look at a few planes that are owned by members and ask questions and you can see what you may like.

I know a lot of the jets and pretty planes look nice on the nitroplanes site but believe me they will become rubbish if you don't get the proper instruction.

Look forward to seeing you at the club meeting and we will guide you in the right direction.

Another comment on the RTF versions of some planes:  If they come with a 5 channel Tx, consider NOT getting the RTF and instead, get a 6 channel Tx separately, and then choose a nice BNF airplane to match.  The reason why I say this is the 6 channel Tx has many features you will want that are not available in a 5 channel Tx.
