Warning!!  The following news footage may be disturbing to some viewers!!  Wink

http://www.myfoxdc.com/dpp/news/virginia/video-blue-colored-ufo-in-centreville-110410

With the recent development of LEDs for RCs, night flying has really become easy and fun.  An excellent platform for night flying is the Radian electric glider.  It is stable, slow, and will fly without too much stick handling.  Just perfect for a peaceful night of flying under the stars.

If you haven't tried it, it is like float flying; just a different RC experience that is a real treat.  Just try not to freak out your neighbors.

PS  I have contacted the individual and Fox News and informed them of the source of the mysterious blue lights in the night sky.

Here are pics of the real thing.  Very "alien like" in the night sky, and very, very bright.

Hmm I may have to do that to my Skywalker when I get it going. Are you using the standard light strips you get for computers?

This is too funny!  I bet you really busted the bubble of the eyewitness, he was so excited.

These are the light strips I got from Hobby Hangar.  $10/ft, but you can probably get them online cheaper (Common Sense RC or Hobby King).  Also, I mounted them with the LED INTO the plane by cutting little holes with a brass tube (clear light packing tape to attach to the plane).  A grove would also work, but holes are less descructive to the structure.  This would only work on a white foam airplane however.  Otherwise mount the with the lights exposed.

Consumes about 110mah/ft/hr.

I agree with Gary,

Tony,

That is too cool. We definitely have to have a night fly next year. I think we could even do a night fly camp out. See if we could talk to the park authority or even the wine place?

I will help with the set up of this event. However at the wine pace we can have a beer by the camp fire. And i can absolutely guarantee you the county park wont let us have a beer. This could actually end up being a big event. Lets talk more about this idea!!!!

I emailed Fox News and they came out to film the "UFO."  I gave them our web site, and they want to come out to see our field and watch us fly!

Fox News is coming to Poplar Ford!

Folks, just a note on safety, I fly it from private property not a school yard.  I keep it over unpopulated terrain and below 400 ft.

It is very peaceful and relaxing to fly at night, and the lights look cool from below.

I did mine with 12' of blue, and 1 ft red.  But 10' blue would have been plenty.
