Hi guys,

I look forward to coming out to the field as soon as I can and meeting some of you.
I have been a park flyer for about 4 years now. I mostly buy ARFs or BNFs. My building skills are fairly good, but not great. So far, everything I have built has flown well:) I would say I'm a novice to advanced pilot.
I'm currently flying a MS Composite Unique, MS Composite Pitts, Parkzone Wildcat, GWS Formosa, AT-6, and A cub, oh yeh and a nutball. My son and I also own just about every micro that PZ has made. Don't worry, we won't be bringing the micros around much. My son is now ready for me to buddy box him with the Cub and he is looking forward to it. He's 10, so I'm not sure how he would fit in the membership guidelines.
I fly with a Spektrum DX6i and have just about filled up my 10 model memory.

Anyway, glad to be here and I look forward to getting started.

Gerald

Here are a few pics of my planes.

Welcome to the Club Gerald. Hope to see you at the field soon. I'm fairly new to the club but the club is filled with pilots with many years of experience. They will be glad to get you started in some of the bigger planes so that you and your son can have a good time at the field.

Hi Gary, thanks for the reply.

I have been in the rc stuff for a long time, but have only been flying for a few years. I hope it's ok that I'm comfortable with the planes I'm currently flying and don't plan to move into larger planes for a couple of years.

I'm mostly looking for a club where I can talk and have fun with the guys and have fun flying planes at the same time.
It is getting more difficult to find a field to fly in and I just learned that there is actually a law that says you can't operate any rc model in any Fairfax county parks. So I need a safe place to fly. Well, that's what I heard from a local guy at the swap meet at Hobby Hangar, not sure if it's true, but I plan on checking into it.

My son is just getting ready to buddy box with a 36" cub. I think he will enjoy that very much. Up until now he has only flown the micro planes. He's pretty good with his Micro Cub:)

Hey Gerald,

Well, if you like talking, sharing, and having fun you've found the right club. Great bunch of guys and look forward to seeing you at the field. Keep checking out the website and it should keep you informed. I think you will like our new field. If you need anything please contact any of the new member liaison guys or myself.

As far as flying in Fairfax I've heard the same restrictions for flying in parks or schools.

Hey Gary,
Do you know if I can sign up to this club with an AMA Parkflyer membership or does it have to be a full AMA membership?

I just remembered something that happened to me last year. While I was flying my Unique at Pineridge park, 10 min from my house, a FF officer parked his car and came up to me while I was flying. I thought for sure he was going to tell me I couldn't fly there. He asked me if I knew anything about the car in the parking lot with the hood open. I explained it was my car and I had the hood open to charge batteries. At that point he only questioned about the plane and where I got it and how much it was Cheesy He never mentioned anything about RC laws.

I guess it all depends on who you run into.

Hey Gerald,

Let me attempt to answer the Park questions. I will provide the link to the Policy and pull out what you need to know about it.

http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/parkpolicy/FCPAPolicyManual.pdf

§1.17 Remote-Control Devices and Powered Models or Toys
No person shall operate hobby rockets, remote-control gliders or powered remote-control or tethered planes, boats, cars or other like devices in a park except in areas designated by and with the express written permission of the Park Authority.

Violations of any of the rules according to the Virginia Code:

15.2-5705. Violation of rules and regulations.

Any violation of any such rule and regulation adopted pursuant to provision 17 of 15.2-5704 shall constitute a Class 4 misdemeanor.

(1977, c. 381, 15.1-1232.1; 1997, c. 587.)

That should answer the park question. This was a quick look at the topic.

Gary V (law is not my profession so there maybe other laws out there as well)

I new to the hobby but fly some of the bigger planes. I'm sure Steve or one of the other officers will see the forum and be able to answer your question on membership.

You will probably get a quicker answer sending and email to:

Ken Bassett at rcflyer132@aol.com or
Steve at STEVEN.M.INSALACO@saic.com

I'm sure he can help you out.

Here is what I got out of our By Laws:

D. QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

1. Pilots must be AMA members in any category except the “Park Pilot Program”.  Additionally, they must be either an NVRC member or an accompanied guest of a NVRC member. Guest pilots may fly up to three visits in a calendar year before being required to join the club.  Exceptions may be made for special circumstances.
2. New club members will qualify for unsupervised flight status in accordance with the current NVRC Pilot Training and Qualification Guide. A blue “dot” on the NVRC membership card indicates a qualified flier.
3. All pilots must comply with the NVRC Field Rules that are posted at NVRC flying field(s) and on the NVRC website.

What is a park flyer model?
Welcome to Park Pilot  http://www.theparkpilot.org/

The AMA currently defines a park flyer as a model weighing less than 2 pounds that is incapable of reaching speeds of faster than 60 mph. It must use electric power for propulsion, be remotely controlled or flown with a control line, and remain within the pilot’s line of sight at all times.

Gary, thanks for your reply, but somehow we aren't connecting. I wasn't asking about the law about park flying.

This is the question I need to have answered.

Do you know if I can sign up to this club with an AMA Parkflyer membership or does it have to be a full AMA membership?

I would assume the answer is yes because you/we are flying in a park and even without a runway I might add. So, I'm ready so sign up but I need to know if an AMA Parkflyer membership is adequite for this club.

Thanks

Sorry Gary, I didn't see your post.

Thanks again for all the help.

That's kind of a shame because I fit this description perfectly.

The AMA currently defines a park flyer as a model weighing less than 2 pounds that is incapable of reaching speeds of faster than 60 mph. It must use electric power for propulsion, be remotely controlled or flown with a control line, and remain within the pilot’s line of sight at all times.

Well, all except the ridiculous part about the control line, no one flies those anymore. Well maybe a few spread across the world, Smiley lol

Ok, so it's going to cost me twice the amount for the full AMA membership, I guess I will have to fork it out. I'm guessing it's an annual thing? if so I wonder if the membership is 12 months from the day you sign up or...? I don't see that info on the AMA site.

Hey Gerald,

Best thing to do is contact Ken. He is really good and will answer all of your questions. If I'm not mistaken, if you sign up now it is also good for next year. Something like. Don't quote me on that.

Moving forward,
Just signed up for full AMA membership. Since I signed up after 9/15 it will be good through next year.

I will be filling out the 1NVRC app as soon as I get my AMA number.

My son is only 11, when trying to sign him up the date only goes back to 1992, so I guess he will be ok with a qualified member at his side.
I'll contact Ken for more info.

Off to study the club ByLaws Wink

Gary, thanks again for your help and I look forward to meeting you.
