The new field..

Notice to the Membership:

Although a new field has been secured we are still in the process of preparing the field for flying....

Update 5/5/08

Development of our new field is moving along. Although the wet weather caused some delays, by this past Saturday the contractor had finished the work to level the field. This week we expect that the field will be smoothed and grass seed planted. It won’t be long!!

Please do not fly at the new site. There is currently a lock on the gate preventing entry into the facility. A notice will be sent out when we open!

NVRC's Adopt -A- School Project Westfields High School - Gliders 2008!

As part of our community involvement, NVRC is helping Westfield's High School's Aerospace class build gliders. Over the course of the next 6 weeks Chuck Cowell's Aerospace class will be working on the Spirit Glider kits. Students are graded on overall craftsmanship, team participation, cleanup, and overall project completion. The final grade will be wether or not the glider flies. So far the students are off to a great start and the progress so far is ahead of schedule.

So far the students have completed both the horizontal and vertical stabilizers, and the Fuselage. The next two weeks will be focused on building the wing. After the students complete the main building they'll focus on covering the plane and installing the electronics. A final lesson in weight and balance will be included before flying the gliders by a certified AMA Pilot.

More pictures can be seen in the Westfields 2008 Gallery

Fun Fly events Wine, Cheese, and Planes?

It was a day of Flying, BBQ and Wine (no one flew under the influence). Representatives from our four local clubs attended a Fly In at the Doukenie Winery near Hillsboro, Va. Attending the event was Doug Cash, Marsh Dehart, Pat Dunlap, Scott Fuller (holding the camera), Fred Gay, Ron King, Charlie Koustenis, Dave Linthicum, Don Manson, Gary Robinson, and Herb Weinberg. Many thanks to everyone that attended a great day of flying! More pictures in the gallery...

  General Announcements 2008 Literary Contest

Do you remember your first model airplane? Do you still have a picture of it? Then please participate in the Windsock 2008 literary contest! The rules are very simple:

A. First off, the good part. The winner receives a $75 gift certificate, second place $50 and, if there are that many entries, $25 for third. (Come on guys! This means that just by entering you're practically guaranteed to wins something!)

B. The model in question must have been designed as a flying model (control line, free flight, or R/C) and must have flown successfully at least once. (Successful takeoff qualifies, successful landing a plus, but not required)

C. You must have built the model (assistance from dad or friend ok, but no Cox, Wen-Mac, Stanzel or similar ready-to-fly planes)

D. The article must be at least the equivalent of one typewritten page (12 point times new roman, single space). We won't haggle if it's a few lines short.

E. Judging will be primarily on overall content, but style, pictures and good grammar will all be considered on the plus side. (Which means that it pays to proof read -not just spell check- and to have someone else proof read it as well)

F All entries must be submitted electronically and received by the 31 July 08.

Send all submissions to windsock@1nvrc.org!
